It was Dee and Ryo’s sole day off this week, which sucked to begin with. One day off just wasn’t enough, and it made Dee envious of the guys who worked nine to five, Monday to Friday, in some cushy office job. Granted, he would have loathed working in an office, he’d never been one of those sit behind a desk all day kind of people. He liked the action and excitement he got from being a cop, even if there was still pain in the ass paperwork to contend with. Didn’t mean he couldn’t still envy office drones their working hours.
Anyway, one day off, and Ryo had said he’d be busy with chores all day, which was fair; the last couple of weeks had been wall-to-wall work, so they’d both gotten behind in the housework department. Dee had spent all morning catching up with his own overdue chores; grocery shopping and laundry could only be ignored for so long before they became pressing needs, but a solo lunch, ironing, and a spot of cleaning had still only taken him through to mid-afternoon…
He was trying to decide how to fill the rest of the day when his phone rang; it was Ryo. Dee grinned as he answered.
“Hey, babe. Miss me?”
Ryo laughed. “We’ve only been apart a few hours. Listen, I wanted to apologise for blowing you off earlier. I just had a lot to do getting ready for my party.”
His lover was throwing a party? That was the first Dee had heard of it, and he racked his brains trying to think what the occasion might be. He was pretty good at keeping track of significant dates, unlike Ryo, but nothing came to mind. “What party would that be?”
“The one I’m calling to invite you to, of course.” Ryo said it as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.
“Oh, uh…” Dee fumbled for what to say. As much as he wanted to spend time with his baby, he wasn’t thrilled at the thought of having to share Ryo with a bunch of other guests, people he might not even know. “I don’t know, today’s been kinda busy, and I was thinkin’ of maybe stoppin’ by the orphanage to see if Mother needs anything doin’.” That was a flat out lie; he’d dropped in there for a visit on his way home from work the night before.
“I thought you said you were going there last night.”
“Right, sorry; slipped my mind.” Dee winced; Ryo was way too sharp sometimes.
“You must be getting old if you forgot that,” Ryo teased. “They say memory’s the first thing to go.”
“You can talk. You’re older than me.”
“Only by a year,” Ryo said, laughing. Then he sighed, the disappointment clear in his voice. “Well, it’s too bad; it won’t be much of a party if you don’t come. I was counting on you.”
“Is that so? Well…” Dee didn’t want to disappoint his baby. Would it really be so bad? He could suck it up and mingle with Ryo’s guests for a bit, in the hopes of scoring a little one-on-one time after the other guests left. “Maybe I could stop in for an hour or so later on. Who else did you invite?”
“Just you,” Ryo replied, sounding smug. “It’s a party for two.”
A slow smile spread across Dee’s face. “Yeah? Why didn’t ya say so right away?” Then a thought struck him. “Wait, what about the house ape?”
“Bikky’s at a friend’s birthday party, he’ll be there all night, so I thought we should take the opportunity for a party of our own.”
“I love the way you think. In that case, count me in! When’s this party startin’?”
“That depends on when the guest of honour arrives. That’s you, in case you’re wondering.”
“Yeah, I figured that part out all by myself. So, what should I wear, and do ya want me to bring anything?”
“Wear whatever you want, and all you need to bring is yourself; I’ve got everything else covered; food, drink, and, uh, the other necessities.”
“Glad to hear it. ‘Kay, I’m on my way, be about half an hour!”
“Okay, see you soon.”
Ryo hung up and Dee went to change out of his scruffs into something more suitable for the evening ahead. His boring, lonely day off had just taken a distinct turn for the better!
