“D’you ever think about quittin’ the force?” Dee asked Ryo late one evening. Bikky was already in bed, and since the two detectives didn’t have work the following day, they were lounging on Ryo’s sofa enjoying a rare glass of wine and a late movie.
Ryo smiled wryly. “Only every week or so. You know, whenever a new case comes across our desks, or someone we arrested gets off even though we know they’re guilty, or when one of us, or one of our friends, gets hurt.”
“Not just me then.”
“Probably more than half the cops in the NYPD feel that way on a regular basis, but in the end we don’t quit, because we became cops for a reason and despite everything, we know we’re making a difference. Things would be worse if all the dedicated, honest police officers quit and only left the ones who’re dirty.”
“I guess.”
“What brought this on? Or do I even need to ask?” Their latest case was dragging them both down.
“Too many dead kids?”
“Even one is too many,” Ryo pointed out.
“Yeah, and that’s my point. Every homicide is bad, but when the victim’s a kid…”
“But how many kids have we saved?”
Dee nodded. “A lot.”
There’d been Bikky and Carol, but they were far from the only ones.
“Every life we save is a victory. So is every criminal we successfully put behind bars.”
“But there’s always more.” Dee tipped his head back against the sofa cushions, wine glass forgotten in his hand.
“And there always will be. It’s an ongoing battle, but just because we can’t win it doesn’t mean we should stop trying.”
“You’re right. Just, sometimes the job gets on top of me.”
“Me too, but neither of us has to face it alone.”
The End
