Thinking about it, Drake couldn’t really blame JJ for being obsessed with Dee for so long. JJ was a gay man, and Dee was one of the most physically perfect men Drake had ever met in the flesh. With his height, his leanly muscular build, black hair, and handsome face, he could have been a movie star or a male model, yet here he was, a detective working for the NYPD.
Drake couldn’t match his friend in any department. He was average height, average build, probably below average in the looks department compared with the kinds of men JJ was probably used to dating. He was relentlessly ordinary, so why shouldn’t JJ have looked straight past him and been fixated on Dee for so long?
Besides, JJ had met Dee at the police academy, long before he’d ever met Drake, and even when they HAD met, Drake had still been resolutely living the heterosexual lifestyle, or trying to. He’d never seriously considered dating a guy, even though he’d experienced a couple of teenage crushes on friends back in high school. Not that he’d ever said anything about that to anyone.
He liked girls. A lot. If he also kinda liked guys, well, that was his business and no one else’s. He’d never made a move on a guy, or even considered doing so. Probably would have spent his entire adult life being rejected by one woman after another, if JJ hadn’t made a move on him, and at the time, he’d thought it was some sort of rebound response on JJ’s part to realising he’d never win Dee’s heart. Why else would JJ turn his attention from someone as attractive as Dee to Mister Average Drake Parker, he of the terrible taste in clothes, and the beginnings of a beer belly?
Only it hadn’t ended up being a rebound, even if it might have started that way. JJ lavished affection and attention on him as if nobody else existed, and Drake did his best to reciprocate. He still didn’t understand what JJ saw in him, but maybe it didn’t matter.
