Jack didn’t do feelings, not anymore; they made his endless existence too difficult. How many times could a heart be broken before it simply couldn’t heal anymore? Since becoming immortal, he’d already loved and lost far too many times. Either his lovers, realising he never aged, would become resentful over something outside of Jack’s control, or they’d die. He still wasn’t sure which hurt worse.

So he’d stopped caring, stopped getting involved in other people’s lives. He slept around, satisfying his needs with random strangers whose names he seldom bothered to learn or remember. Relationships were for people who had a finite lifespan. He was better off keeping everyone at arm’s length. If he stayed single, avoided any emotional entanglements, maybe his battered heart would remain intact.

It was all very logical and sensible, and for years he managed to stick to his plan. All he had to do was remember how he’d felt when Lucia walked out on him, taking his daughter with her. He never wanted to go through anything like that again.

But inevitably, building an impregnable wall around his heart proved impossible. He didn’t realise he’d fallen in love with Ianto until it was too late.
