Dee muttered something incomprehensible as he glared at the paperwork strewn across his desk, then picked up his pen with a long-suffering sigh.

“We’ve got computers, and still we gotta fill out all this stuff by hand. Endless forms for every little thing, in duplicate, or triplicate, or whatever. It’s like the assholes in charge think we don’t got anything better to do with our time, like… I don’t know, how ‘bout actually gettin’ out on the streets, investigatin’ crimes and catchin’ the bad guys?”

Ryo grinned at his partner. “You know, this would take a lot less time if you stopped complaining about the paperwork and started doing it. The sooner we get it all filled in and on Chief Smith’s desk, the sooner we can get back out on the street.”

“Yeah, I know, it just feels like bureaucracy’s outta control these days.”

Head bent over his own stack of forms, Ryo muttered, “I’m not convinced it was ever under control in the first place, but it goes with the job, so we just have to live with it.”

“I’m just waitin’ for the day when all our paperwork can be done on the damn computers. Sometimes I wonder why we’re even given ‘em. All I use mine for are emails and typin’ up reports. Even then we gotta print everything out and file it. So much for goin’ digital, with everythin’ easily accessible.”

“And what would happen if there was a power outage, or the system crashed? How would we get access to our files, case notes, autopsy results, evidence lists, all of that, if it wasn’t available as paper copies? We have two systems now, instead of one, and each one is a backup for the other.”

“Guess you’re right, but it’s still a damn nuisance.”

Paperwork, sigh. Computers were supposed to fix that problem. They did not.
